Nine fatalities have been confirmed, including two children.
The area was battered by high winds, heavy rain and hail, flooding streets, homes and submerging cars several feet deep.
Tornado warnings were issued across the Midwest states of Oklahoma and Missouri as a large storm front moved across the region, known as “Tornado Alley”.
A sinkhole developed off a main road as high waters caused the soil to crumble. And Oklahoma City’s Will Rogers World Airport was evacuated, with flights suspended.
Winds estimated at over 150 miles per hour reduced advertising hoardings to twisted metal frames and over 90,000 homes and business were left without power.
Over one hundred people have been reported injured, due to cuts from flying debris.
Saturday marked the official start of the US hurricane season. Around 1,200 tornadoes strike the US mainland every year, mainly across the Great Plains states of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
